この度、FUMA Contemporary Tokyo | BUNKYO ARTでは、山田航平展を開催いたします。会期 I では、ドローイング、ペーパーワーク、エディションワークを展示。会期 II では、キャンバス作品とその下図を展示いたします。過去、最大規模となる山田航平展です。ご高覧頂ければ幸いです。

FUMA Contemporary Tokyo | BUNKYO ART is pleased to announce Kohei Yamada's solo exhibition. The First Round of the exhibition will showcase drawings, paper works and edition works. The Second Round will showcase paintings and drafts. This will be Kohei Yamada's biggest solo exhibition yet. We look forward to seeing you.

個展タイトル「SELF AND OTHERS」は、以前に写真家・牛腸茂雄の写真集のタイトルとして出会って以来、ずっと頭に引っかかっていた言葉です。同写真集の中にあった言葉、「願望の自画像」という言葉も強く印象に残っていました。
私の描く人物がよく作家本人に似ていると言われる(私自身はあまり意識していません)ことや、他者の作品を通して自分の内面や視点、憧憬を表現しているという点で自分の制作にフィットする言葉であると感じたため、今回こちらのタイトルを引用しました。

ポップ・アートの持つ楽観、軽薄さ、アイロニー、ユーモアといった清濁併せ持つ明るさと、クラシックな絵画の持つ描くことや視ることへの純粋な喜び、メチエ(仏語で手腕、技巧の意)という一見相容れない要素を融合したい。昔も今も私を強く惹きつけて止まないそれら両方の魅力を含む作品を創造したいと願いながら日々制作をしています。
ARTにはいかなる正解もない、正解どころか問いすらない現代において、他ならぬ私が作品を制作する意味とは。テクノロジーの進歩によっていかなる映像も自由自在に生み出し操ることが可能な現代において、時間や気力や体力の全てを賭して一枚の絵画を描く意味とは。これらを常に自分に問いながら、その時々の最良の答えとしての作品を発表し続け、変化・進化し続けることができたならば、いち作家としてこれほど嬉しいことはありません。これからも、ビジュアルの面ではより洗練された造形の絵画を目指し、内容の面ではより重層的な複雑さを持った作品を目指し、私なりの芸術闘争をしていきたいと思います。


My upcoming solo exhibition shares the same title with Shigeo Gocho’s photo book, “Self and Others”. This title has been in my head since the moment I first encountered it. The phrase “self-portrait of desire” mentioned in the book has also left a deep impression on me. 
Through the work of other artists I often express my inner self, perspective, and aspirations, and although it is not my intention, on a few occasions I was told that the characters I draw often resemble myself. These are the reasons why I decided to use the same title as the book, as I felt that these words fit well with my artistic practice.
I want to combine the optimism, frivolity, irony, and humor of pop art with the métier (French for skill and technique) and the pure joy that comes from creating and viewing classical painting. I create every day hoping that my work will possess both of these fascinating qualities that have allured me for so long.
What does it mean for me to create art in today’s world, where there is no correct answer, nor questioning? What does it mean to create, to spend all the time, energy, and physical strength I have to make a single painting when we live in a world where modern technology can easily produce and manipulate any image? The ultimate joy for me as an artist would be to keep asking myself these questions as I am able to continue exhibiting art that is the best answer at a given time, while my work keeps changing and evolving.
I want to continue my pursuit as an artist, aiming for more visually sophisticated paintings, with more depth in complexity and content.

山田航平は既存の美術作品からイメージや色彩を取り込んだ絵画作品により、マルセル・デュシャン以降から続く現代美術、特にポップ・アートの歴史をシミュレーションし、その意味と価値に分解・再定義・再構築し、その現代的な可能性を問い続ける活動を一貫して続けています。
 同時に、山田は過剰とも言える繊細な描き込みを自らに徹底し、一つ一つの作品に細やかに筆を入れ、あたかもヤン・ファン・エイク等のネーデルラント絵画的なリアリズムの重厚さと緊張を画面にもたらしますが、その重さとビジョナリーなポップさを両立させている点こそが、近年のローカルチャーとアートが入り混じる日本のシーンにおいて彼を特異な存在たらしめる大きな要素となっています。
 「キャラクター以外に描きたいものがない」という山田の作品は、日本におけるサブカルチャー、ネットカルチャーに囲まれて育った世代が自分たちのカルチャーと美術をどのように融合させるかという、世代的テーマとの関係性も伺えます。自らが取り込んだ他作品のコンテクストを一つのキャラクターに寄託し、言わば漫画やアニメーションに特有の「キャラクターを通して物語や世界を語る」という、彼の世代のカルチャーに見受けられる表現方法をさえ自らの作品の糧としています。
  山田航平という一人のアーティストの魅力は、一重には現代美術を大胆にシミュレートする発想力、それらを自らの時代背景に結びつけながら、古典的な絵画技法にも通ずる徹底した技術力によって作品化する点にこそあると言えます。そしてその全ては山田が自らの絵画を、これから先も続くであろう長大な美術の歴史に刻み付けるという宿願の元に行われます。歴史に呑まれるか、歴史に名を残すか、このアーティストにとって絶対的な命題にどこまでも真摯に取り組むからこそ、山田の作品はひとを魅了する力を持ちうるのかもしれません。

Kohei Yamada's paintings incorporate images and colors from existing artworks, simulate the history of contemporary art, especially Pop Art, which has continued since Marcel Duchamp.
Through his paintings, Yamada continues to question their contemporary potential by consistently deconstructing, redefining, and reconstructing their meaning and value.
In the process of creating, Yamada is thorough in his paintings, and with a delicacy that can be described as excessive, he strikes his brush in a very meticulous manner. By doing so, he brings the gravity and realistic tension of the Netherlandish paintings of Jan van Eyck and others to the picture plane. However, the fact that he manages to combine that heaviness with a visionary pop feel is one of the major factors that makes him unique in the Japanese scene, where low culture and art have become intertwined in recent years.
About drawing characters, Yamada says, "Except characters I don’t paint any other motifs", which tells us about characteristics of his generation. Having grown up surrounded by Japanese subculture and cyberculture, this generation of artists is always thinking about how to integrate their heritage into their art. Yamada grasps the contexts of works of others and puts them into a single character, and "tells a story of the world through a character", as it is in manga and animations. This way of expressing own generation and culture is what keeps his creative process going.
In other words, what’s so fascinating about Kohei Yamada as an artist is his creativity to boldly simulate contemporary art and connect it with his own historical background, sublimate it into his works with a thorough technical skill that is also in line with the techniques of classical painting. All of this is based on Yamada's strong desire to have his paintings inscribed in the long history of art that will continue into the future. Through art, Yamada has the power to captivate people with his sincere attitude of not being swayed by history, but rather critically examining it, and by doing so, he strives to preserve his works in history.
